What type of entrepreneur are you?!?

Starting out in business I didn’t know what to do except create/build/grow, then sell, sell, sell. I didn’t even know there were different types of business owners and no one in my little town of Ringgold, Virginia was calling business owners entrepreneurs. Though I’ve been learning about business for the last 25 years, it was only about 10 years ago when I realized all of the opportunities there were in the entrepreneurial and startup space. Let’s talk about the four types of entrepreneurs I run into often.

Starting Pitcher

First up to the plate, the starting pitcher! Starting Pitchers create and launch startups. Once  has gained traction and starts growing, they sell it and move on to the next venture. This is your typical serial entrepreneur (which is more commonly heard than starting pitcher). You know these people, Sir Richard Branson, Elon Musk and Oprah Winfrey are some of my favorites!

Professional Entrepreneur

Next, professional entrepreneurs stick with the venture from startup through its lifecycle. Even if you’re young in your startup, a professional entrepreneur will need to develop an array of management skills to run and scale the business. Think of Mark Zuckerberg who has run Facebook since 2004.

Hybrid Entrepreneur

I considered myself at this stage in my life, a hybrid entrepreneur. Hybrid entrepreneurs are both starting pitchers and professional entrepreneurs. When I thought about some famous hybrid entrepreneurs, I immediately thought of Gary Vee and Jeff Bezos.

These hybrid entrepreneurs can also be an entrepreneur who also has a 9-5 job and a startup.  Thinking of some of these entrepreneurs who started with a 9-5 job and ran a business at the same time, some became millionaires and billionaires. Consider Mark Cuban, J.K. Rowling, Harrison Ford, and even Ray Crock.

Lifestyle Entrepreneur

Last but certainly note least, we have lifestyle entrepreneurs. Lifestyle entrepreneurs are those who create a business in order to drastically change their lifestyle. In a world where technology is easily accessible many of these entrepreneurs work to create a social brand and multiple streams of income to build their business. Others run some type of venture fund. In my opinion, they live the good life. They can do their business from anywhere, they can pivot fairly quickly, and receive a lot of passive income in the process. Yes, these people are entrepreneurs too and they learn to capitalize from what they are good at.

Now, which type of entrepreneur or you? More importantly, which type of entrepreneur do you want to be. These don’t have to be mutually exclusive answers. Knowing what type of entrepreneur you are leads to how you best start and grow your business. It helps you build the strategy and roadmap for your personal success. I hope you all can learn which of these type of entrepreneurs you want to be and work toward your goals!

Until next time, and remember, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom”
